FAQ

  • Therapy with me is a collaborative, empowering, and deeply reflective process. Rather than telling you what to do, I help you explore your experiences, emotions, and relationships so you can discover answers for yourself. My goal is to guide you toward living your most authentic life with greater self-awareness and confidence.

Sessions are a balance of deep exploration, education, and co-regulation. If you ever ask for my perspective, I’m happy to share it, but I may also redirect the question to encourage deeper self-reflection. When needed, I provide education and insight, understanding how frustrating it can be to feel lost without guidance.

Co-regulation plays a key role in our work. I help create a safe, grounded space by attuning to both your emotions and mine, using techniques like a calm voice and slowed breathing to support you in moments of overwhelm. Over time, this practice strengthens your ability to manage emotions, trust yourself, and build healthier relationships.

I also believe therapy should feel human, relatable, and validating. Humor, authenticity, and even sharing aspects of my own lived experiences (when appropriate) help foster connection and growth.

Above all, I see therapy as a partnership. I walk alongside you—offering support, insight, and encouragement—so you can move toward healing and self-trust at your own pace.

  • We request that you provide 24-hour notice if you need to cancel an appointment, just as you would with any medical provider. Failure to notify us within this timeframe will result in the appointment being considered a late cancellation.

Late cancellations or rescheduled sessions made less than 24 hours in advance will be subject to a full charge of the late cancellation/no show fee ($120). This policy is in place to honor the exclusive time committed to you. There are no exceptions to this policy.

If you have two late cancellations or no-shows within a 3-month period, your future appointments will be canceled, and you will be discharged from the practice. This policy is strictly enforced to respect the time and commitment of your therapist, and we will provide you with a list of referrals for continued care. This policy is in place to ensure that we can maintain an effective practice for all clients.

  • Surviving to Thriving Therapy specializes in working with neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD, Autism, and OCD.

We also specialize in working with those healing from trauma, complex trauma, and the effects of systemic oppression.

Our approach is also tailored to those experiencing religious or relational abuse, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Additionally, we are deeply committed to supporting the LGBTQIA2S+ community, offering a safe and affirming space to explore identity, relationships, and mental well-being.

  • The first therapy session, often called an intake or diagnostic assessment, is more structured and formal than typical therapy sessions. This assessment is necessary to gain a full picture of how systemic, biological, psychological, spiritual, familial, cultural, and social factors may have impacted—or continue to impact—your functioning and well-being. It allows me to meet you where you are and tailor your treatment plan effectively. If you are using insurance, this assessment is required, and all the questions asked—whether you are self-pay or using insurance—align with what insurance companies mandate. I understand that this process can feel invasive or even triggering, and I want to acknowledge that it is my least favorite part of the therapeutic journey as well. Because of this, I strive to make the process as comfortable and supportive as possible while ensuring we gather the necessary information to provide you with the best care.

If clients are needing more sessions to accommodate the need for crisis stabilization and intervention, clients should be aware before scheduling that our capacity and availability is limited. • Yes, I provide ESA letters for clients seeking authorization for housing purposes. However, I do not issue ESA or service dog letters for airline travel. I do require that you are an ongoing client on my caseload when writing an ESA letter for housing purposes.

  • Surviving to Thriving Therapy strongly believes police officers are not equipped to offer mental health support and may even pose a danger to Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Transgender, Mentally Ill, Neurodivergent, and Disabled People.

Therefore, calling 911 and dispatching the police is an absolute last resort, after all other methods have been exhausted and tried.

Surviving to Thriving Therapy LLC abides by its Protocol for Suicide and Homicidal Risk which details and outlines the steps before a 911 call has to be made.

All clients who onboard through my personal EHR system, Sessions Health, are required to review and sign the Protocol for Suicide Risk.

If you are onboarding through my contractor’s (Higher Sights Counseling) EHR system, Simple Practice, due to the insurance provider you hold, you may request a copy of this protocol to keep on hand for your records at any time.

  • Surviving to Thriving Therapy is open Sunday through Wednesday from 2 PM to 7 PM.

I do not monitor emails, phone calls, or text messages outside of business hours. If you contact me outside of these hours, I will respond within 24–48 hours.

  • If my caseload is full, I am unable to take on new clients at that time. However, those interested in working with me can request to be added to my waitlist.

Being on the waitlist means that I cannot schedule you for services until a current client either violates my attendance policy, is unable to continue payment, or discharges early for any reason. When a spot becomes available, I follow a first-come, first-served approach, reaching out to the next person on the list.

If I contact you about an opening, you will have 48 hours to respond. If I do not receive a response within that time, you will be moved to the bottom of the waitlist, and I will proceed to the next person in line.

Because openings depend on client transitions, I cannot guarantee a specific wait time. However, the typical timeframe for availability is approximately 3 to 6 months. I appreciate your patience and look forward to the opportunity to work with you when a spot becomes available.

  • If you would like to schedule an appointment or be added to my waitlist, please reach out through the contact page on my website.

    Example Inquiry:

    Subject: Therapy Inquiry

    Hello Roxanne,

My name is [First Name, Last Name, pronouns], and I am seeking therapy for support with depression and anxiety. I would like to meet with you weekly for in-person sessions. My work schedule requires an evening appointment or a Sunday session. I have [________] insurance.

Could we schedule a consultation to determine if we are a good fit? I have already submitted a request through the link on your website.

    Thank you!

  • I require all potential clients to complete a free 15-minute consultation to ensure we are a good fit before beginning therapy. This step is important in creating a supportive and effective therapeutic relationship.

What to Expect from the Consultation:

    • Conducted Online – No need to worry about a phone call! All consultations take place via telehealth, allowing us to see each other face-to-face in a secure, online setting.

    • A More Formal Approach – Unlike a typical therapy session, consultations are slightly more structured. This approach helps protect your confidentiality and ensures you feel safe and regulated after our conversation, especially if we decide we are not the right fit. You will never be pressured to share more than you feel comfortable with.

    • Getting to Know You – I will invite you to share a bit about what you're struggling with and what you're hoping to gain from therapy. Based on what you share, I may ask general follow-up questions to better understand your needs and ensure that my approach aligns with your goals.

    • Answering Your Questions – This is also an opportunity for you to ask me anything that will help you feel more comfortable. Many clients ask about my therapy style, the modalities I use, or aspects of my identity that may be important to them.

    • Discussing Logistics – We will also review the cost of therapy and discuss the next steps if we decide to move forward together.

My goal is for you to leave the consultation feeling informed, respected, and empowered to make the best decision for your mental health.
